Know where your company really stands

Edgy assesses an organization through the Natural Synergy framework: where it stands, which way it is moving, and what is driving it. Here is what that looks like, with examples from our sample company, Vantage.

Where does it stand?

Operating State

The structural balance between an organization's Resilience and Ingenuity. Four states exist: Synergistic, Insular, Pluralistic and Tumultuous. Synergistic is the target.

Vantage (sample)Pluralistic: low resilience, high ingenuity. ExoScan sample, Section 4

Which way is it drifting?

Drift

Where the Operating State is moving and how fast, and the triggers that will accelerate or reverse that movement.

Vantage (sample)Without intervention, toward Tumultuous. With intervention, toward Synergistic. ExoScan sample, Section 6

Are Vision, Strategy and Culture pulling together?

Alignment

Vision, Strategy and Culture are the three essential components of an organization. When they reinforce one another, information flows freely and the organization becomes both resilient and innovative. A change to one affects the other two.

Vantage (sample)Its own people rate it Aligned at 7.70, with Vision, Strategy and Culture each in the high 7s. OrgScan sample, Section 1

Is it built to last, and built to adapt?

Resilience and Ingenuity

Resilience is the capability to sustain reliable performance under pressure. Ingenuity is the capability to keep generating, integrating and applying new insight as conditions change. Too much of one without the other pulls an organization off balance.

Vantage (sample)Ingenuity is running ahead of the durable commercial cohesion needed to sustain it. ExoAnalysis sample, Section 4

What is pushing it toward synergy, and what is holding it back?

Accelerators and arrestors

Accelerators are the conditions and behaviors that build momentum toward a synergistic state. Arrestors are the ones that suppress that progress or reverse it.

Vantage (sample)Its Bridge connector is an ingenuity accelerator. Revenue that is small for its age and funding is a resilience arrestor. ExoAnalysis sample, Section 8

Is it set up to evolve?

The three principles of synergy

Self-organization, adaptation and dynamism: the three principles that decide whether an organization evolves toward synergy or stagnates.

Vantage (sample)Dynamism and adaptability are active. Self-organization is the softest of the three. OrgAnalysis sample, Section 3

What is the mood inside?

Dominant moods

The emotional climate people work in. Constructive moods fuel ingenuity; negative moods act as an arrestor.

Vantage (sample)Confidence and Respect register at 9, Ambition and Humility at 8, with negative moods held to 2-3. OrgScan sample, Section 1

How do its leaders lead?

Leadership tendencies

Four leadership styles: the Mogul, the Crusader, the Orchestrator and the Harmonizer. Their balance shows whether an organization leans too hard on one way of leading.

Vantage (sample)The dominant signature is Crusader. Mogul capacity is the clearest leadership gap. ExoAnalysis sample, Section 6
